1976 Indiana was the last team to go undefeated, but their point guard (Quinn Buckner) was a very poor 48.8% free throw shooter that season. Odd for a point guard, and odd for an accomplished player like Quinn Buckner. Buckner shot 65.7% for his 10-year NBA career.
Fast forward to October 18, 1977. It was Kent Benson's first regular season game in the NBA. Two minutes into the game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Benson elbows Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Kareem retaliates by sucker-punching Benson. Benson has a broken jaw and a concussion, but misses only 13 games all season. Kareem breaks his hand on Benson's jaw, and is out two months.
