The Illinois High School Association had used the term 'March Madness' since 1939. During the 1982 NCAA Tournament, Brent Musberger used the term 'March Madness', the first time it was used in reference to the NCAA Tournament. In 1988, the NCAA negotiated a joint trademark with the IHSA.
