The 1979 NIT was played with three 'regionals', which makes it tough to have four teams advance to the semifinals. As a result, after the NIT reached the quarterfinals (the 'Elite Six'), a drawing was held to have two teams get a bye into the semifinals at Madison Square Garden.

The two teams selected were the Indiana Hoosiers and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
